How an income-proportional split works

A 50/50 split is simple, but when parents earn very different amounts it can feel lopsided. An income-proportional split divides each cost in the same ratio as the parents' incomes. If Parent A earns $60,000 and Parent B earns $40,000, A covers 60% and B covers 40% — so each contributes an equal share of their means, not an equal number of dollars.

Which split should co-parents use?

There's no universal right answer — it depends on your incomes, your custody arrangement, and any court order. Many families use 50/50 for everyday costs and an income-proportional split for big-ticket items. The most important thing is to agree on the method once, in writing, and apply it consistently so every expense isn't a fresh negotiation.
